No Such Thing As An Offseason

Being a student athlete, you are practicing year round. I am on the softball team here at SRU and our season is in the spring. But our team has been practicing since the beginning of fall. During the fall we have two tournaments we participate in and then we just have practices. After fall ball is over we start hitting the gym by weight lifting and having individuals twice a week. When our season starts getting closer we have to practice inside because there is usually snow still on the ground but we get to go to Florida for spring break. After Florida we begin our season. Once our season is over we have summer workouts we need to do to stay in shape for next season. From reading what the softball team goes through each year every other colligate sport does something similar because there is no such thing as an offseason for college athletes. Every college athlete wants to be the best they can be to help their team win and with that means a lot of hard work and dedication.

Team Work

When entering college I was very nervous about making new friends since I was from a different state and did not know anyone. Well being a player on the SRU softball team I already had 25 friends just from the team. When you are apart of a team, those teammates are always going to have your back because if you like it or not you are always going to be with them whether it is practice, bus rides, games, or even just get togethers. There is no I in team and everyone needs to stick together on a team. Yes from time to time one another may bump heads and not agree but at the end of the day you are all on the same team. You are all trying to achieve one goal to win! Being able to play the sport I love in college is a dream come true. Team work is what makes a team champions.

How Fundraising Is Important In College Athletics

People think that once you get to college to play a sport you do not have to fundraise for equipment and uniforms like you did once in high school. In college athletics there are more aspects that go into fundraising. The money from fundraising has to go towards equipment, uniforms, buses to go to the away games, hotel fees when you have to stay in a hotel for a tournament or a far away game, and food for the away games or tournaments. It takes a lot to fundraise for a team because there are some fundraisers that any teams cannot do. Also it takes time to find people who actually want to help fundraise and give money to the team. When people say that fundraising is easy they are lying because it is not easy while college athletes are balancing schoolwork, their sport, and trying to have a social life then you have to try to ask people to help fundraise money for their college sport.

Life as a Student Athlete

As a student athlete on the Slippery Rock Softball team, isn't as easy as everyone thinks. There is more pressure on student athletes because we have to balance sports and school work as well. People always ask what is the key to make both work, I always say time management is what makes it work. Student athletes need to make time to get good grades and also make time for practice for their sport. The life as a student athlete can be stressful at times but its worth it because we are able to play the sport we love in college and get a good education. I am glad that I am a student athlete.

Happy Holidays from SRU Softball Team

Happy Holidays to everyone! This past week the Slippery Rock softball team came together to do community service. We decided to do Operation Christmas which is when we put boxes of peresents together and send them to different countries. This is nice to do as a team because we are all volunteering to sent presents to children who are less fortunate. Just imagining the children's faces when they open their presents is just exciting. We also decorated a christmas tree filled with softball ornaments. With the holidays right around the corner, we were able to come together as a team and help others.
